We are slowly but surely getting back to "normal" here in Islamorada and the rest of the Upper Keys. All of the keys were officially open for tourism as of October 1st. Part of that decision to open included having hotels and businesses to accommodate the tourist.
Florida Keys Hurricane Cup, Backcountry Fishing Tournament to benefit The Guides Trust Foundation,
October 28, 2017, The Florida Keys
The Florida Keys are officially open for business on October 1st and the fishing guides are ready to get out on the water! Many hotels are open, most restaurants and businesses are as well, and the guides are definitely excited to start doing what they do best. A quick influx of tourists will help all hospitality and service industries to get back on their feet.
As you have heard on the news the Florida Keys was heavily impacted by Hurricane Irma. What you haven't heard is how quickly we are recovering and how the entire Florida Keys was not totally devasted by this hurricane. I do not want to take anything away from the areas that received the most devastation, but it is important to know that the Upper Keys and Key West are a little battered and bruised, but overall we will be able to recover pretty quickly.
Last Friday Andy and Adam caught 3 tarpon, a permit, snappers for dinner, and jacks and cudas.
So the weather is not always PERFECT here in the Florida Keys. However, sometimes we have to make the best of the situation that we are dealt. Yesterday was calling for some rain and wind but my clients only had this one day to go fishing so we decided we were going to try and get it done before the rain came.
First-time anglers don't always know that catching live bait is an important part of their charter. There are some fish that will eat shrimp and crabs, that we can buy from the bait shop, but if you really want a great day on the water we need to catch live pilchards or mullet before we put our lines in the water. Also, with live bait is allows us to fish for a wider variety of fish during the day.
Tarpon season is one of our busiest times here in the Florida Keys. We catch small tarpon throughout the year, but depending on the weather the big boys start arriving in March or April.
It's a beautiful President's Day Weekend here in Islamorada and the Florida Keys. Today I took out long time client, James Holmes bonefishing.
